About the event
Sawdust firing is an ancient way of firing pottery. In this class you will focus on different hand-building techniques to create decorative pieces for the sawdust kiln. These pieces are decorative forms that have a very fine slip, terra sigillata, in white or rich rusty brown applied to them and then burnished. The burnishing process is achieved by rubbing the slipped surface with a stone, cloth, or other tool to compress the surface and make it shiny. The pieces will be fired in a special kiln that is filled with sawdust and burns down creating varied organic white, grey, to black surfaces at one of the teacher’s home.
