Glazes

What you need to know when glazing at the studio

Our Glaze Policy

This policy ensures all Outside Glazes (Glazes not provided by the studio) are compatible with our kilns and safe for our community environment.

1.Permitted Glazes

To be used in the studio, an outside glaze must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Commercial Labeling: Glazes must be in their original commercial packaging with a clear, readable label.

  • Cone Compatibility: The Studio uses glazes, slips, and stains that can be safely fired between cone 04 and cone 6 and fit to the clay purchased in the Studio.

  • Lead-Free, Non-Toxic, and Food Safe glazes only: Glazes with cautions are prohibited.

  • Stable Formulas: Standard commercial glazes from reputable brands (e.g., Amaco, Mayco, Spectrum) are generally acceptable.

  • Experienced Potter: Member must have required glaze knowledge, potting, and glazing skill level. Outside glazes are not approved for beginner potters.

2.Prohibited Glazes

The following are strictly prohibited to protect our equipment and other members work:

  • Hand-mixed/Dry Glazes: No glazes mixed from raw materials or “secret recipes”.

  • Atmospheric Glazes: No luster, raku, or wood-fire specific glazes in our electric kilns.

  • Glass bits

  • Crystalline or High-Run Glazes: Any glaze known to run excessively is prohibited.

3.Usage Requirements

  • Test Tiles: Before using a New outside glaze on a finished piece, you must fire a test tile on a cookie (both provided by you) and show the result to a Studio Monitor.

Test tiles should be at least three inches tall and cookies should be clearly labeled with members name.

  • Liability: Members are financially responsible for any damage to kiln shelves or elements caused by unauthorized or improperly applied outside glazes.

4.Requesting New Glazes

If you want to use a glaze that has not been approved by the Clay Hub Studio please follow this process:

1.Submit a Request:

Requests must go through the Clay Hub email address: theclayhubcollective@gmail.com. Members will be advised to complete the 'Member Request To Use An Outside Glaze' form and will email a copy to the Outside Glaze Monitor doing the requests.

2.Review:

The request will be reviewed and an email sent to member.

3.Approved Glazes:

Outside Glaze Monitor completes the 'Outside Glazes Approved' form found in the Glaze Room. The new glaze is now approved for all members.
